Trump presidency redux

Right now at various locations Trump's band of delusional supporters are gathering to celebrate his Second inauguration .It is quite clear that his core supporters have little knowledge of history ,or for that matter anything else, because if they did they did they may have heard of the Babylonian captivity. At one point there was a schism in the Catholic Church that resulted in there being two popes, one in Rome and one in Avignon.Obviously what should be done  today is  The inauguration of Donald Trump at mal de mer, or Jonestown phase 2 ,as it is sometimes known. They could get a retired justice of the peace to swear at me in to office. The next step would be toRepaintTrumps private plane in the colors of red white and blue and then put the insignia of Trump USAOn the fuselage. He would then be ready to begin state visits. An obvious first state visit would be to his bromancer Kim Jong un.Trump could bring a color guard of his proud boys who could mingle with the thugs  tha...

Looney Tunes presents CPAC 2021

Starting today and continuing through Sunday is the most dysfunctional meeting since Jonestown. It is that a wild and crazy bunch of guys who claim to be the intellectual heirs of Edmund Burke. And guess who is the Keystone speaker? It is not other than that arch conservative Donald Trump. You may recall that Conservativism had as its core the concepts of individual liberty and small government.Trumps ideology to the extent he has one is first,"It's About me"and a close second,"I Want to be a dictator like my hero Putin".We may expect him to enter the hall with a color guard of Proud Boys waving flags saying Trumpf uber alles. There will be apparently at least seven panels discussing how the 2020 Election was stolen from Der Furer. Those willing to spend time watching this nauseating spectacle could amuse themselves by counting how many times the terms"Cancel Culture"and "Socialist"are used.George Orwell would be overwhelmed by the amount of lies...

What Next?

The Senate impeachment trial went as expected-almost.Mitch McConnell instructed his caucus to vote to acquit on the grounds that the proceeding was unconstitutional and the majority of them did.BUT, then Mitch said in no uncertain terms that Trump was guilty of inciting a mob to attempt to overthrow the government and should pay for it The battle is on!My money is on Mitch who is clearly counting on Trump being mired in civil and criminal litigation and the resulting disclosures.Meanwhile as expected republican state legislatures are busy crafting voter restrictions. To paraphrase-"you stole the election by making it possible for your supporters to vote.we are not going to let that happen again ".My hunch for the week is that trump before leaving office issued secret pardons which will soon surface.

Cadet bone spurs avoidsCombat once again

After whipping up the crowd with his usual lies,And having his Consigliari,RudolphGooneygarble ,declare it is time for"Trial by Combat"the fearless leader said it is time to march on the capital and that he was marching with them.Off went the mob,With their battering rams disguised as flagpoles, they apparently forgot their catapults, but where was the fearless leader?Apparently cut that bone spursWas once again avoiding combat at all costs.Perhaps his bone spurs prevented him from marching to the capital. At any rateOff you went to a secure sanctuary where apparently he watched with great pleasure his mob storming the Capital. What does this show? That he knew there was going to be violence and he wanted to avoid it at all costs. The Republican defense that he didn't intend and didn't know this was happeningIs complete BS,pretty much like everything they are saying. The real drama will play out this afternoon and when it is time to vote. After yesterday's session,Senato...

Law of the case– collateral estoppel

Make no mistake about it.The proceedings going on in the Senate today are about the 2022 and 2024 elections.Unless one of those blue Jewish controlled laser bolts that Marjorie Taylor Green is so fond of hits the Senate chamber, the result is for ordained.Donnie will be acquitted. There is also no doubt that most of the Republican senators will seek to justify their vote on the grounds that the proceeding was unconstitutional.  There has already been a vote on that issue and the Senate determined that the proceeding was constitutional and valid. The DemocratsShould now take the position either by statements by Presiding Judge Sen. Leahy or in rebuttal that the Republicans are foreclosed from arguing the constitutional issue. There are two legal doctrines that they could use to support that position. What is the doctrine of the law of the case and the other is the doctrine of collateral estoppel.Typically to use the law of the case there is a ruling by an appellate court prior to...

The days of non-reckoning

We are about to begin the impeachment trial of Donnie Trump or as the Republicans prefer to think of the imbleachment trial that will whitewash everything. The Republicans have several theories of why this proceeding is a farce. The first is what I call the Monty Python defense. You may remember that when John Cleese started massacring wedding guests thinking that a princess was imprisoned and the truth was revealed to him he said"Lets not quibble about who killed who."The Republicans clearly  do not want to quibble about who incited a mob of murderous militia men to storm and take over the capital. They wish to talk about other matters such as the first amendment.Their theory appears to be that it is a violation of the first amendment right of free speech to punish someone for inciting an insurrection.Incredibly enough, they have found lawyers who will assert that position and have. This is theater worthy of Samuel Beckett.  They also have their"How about"defense. The ba...

American exceptionalism

American exceptionalism is a term that is been used for some time. Its original usage was to describe the American experience as exceptional, starting with the creation of theUnited States as an independent country. It was the first significant country to adopt a republican form of government based upon democratic principles. It did not involve the overthrow of a domestic form of government but rather separation from controlled by foreign power. It was created by a group of elitists influenced by Europeans such as Locke, Hume and Montesquieu and was in many respects not democratic as only  white men,not women were allowed to vote and blacks were treated as property except they could be treated as two thirds thirds of a person to determine the number of congressional seats awarded to a particular state. It was none the less exceptional. That may be most evidenced in comparison to the French Revolution which ended in a bloodbath followed closely by the institution of an emperor. The ...
