Unity versus accomplishment
Given what he said on the campaign trail,Biden had to talk about his desire for unity in his inaugural addres. But my fear is he may have oversold his commitment. He is after all dealing withA Republican Congress and one which did well in the last election.I have no doubtThat Mitch McConnell believes, probably correctly,That the only reasonThe Republicans lost the majorityIn the Senate was because of the antics of Donald Trump.I also have no doubt McConnell is going to be primarily,if not exclusively ,interested in gaining control of the SenateIn the next by-election demonstrating that Biden and hisAdministration can't accomplish anything would be their weapon as it was in 2010.
Biden shouldn't giveThe Republicans in Congress more than two weeksTo hammer out an agreement on the coven 19Response bill.Failing that,The Democrats have revise the Senate rules and get rid of he filibuster and the ability of individual congressmen to Bring proceedings to a halt.Undoubtedly the Republicans will claim that show that the Biden administration has no interest in unity. The response to that can simply be that only way to make both parties deal with each other on a bipartisan basis is to eliminate the ability of either party to put proceedings on a dead stop by filibusteringObviously that means the administration can ramrod legislation through but it doesn't mean that they willAnd I don't see that happening other than by necessity. As Republicans used to be fond of saying, elections have consequences.
The Biden administration needs to get things done and they need to get much of it done quickly. There is no time to mess around with the Republicans if it is clear they are basically stalling and prevaricating.
